Nicosia

The capital city of Cyprus, located in the inland is Nicosia and it is the only capital city in the world that is divided in two since the north side of the island is under Turkish occupation. Its ancient name was Ledra and it became the capital city in 647. The entire city is a large museum and it is surrounded by the walls of an ancient Venetian castle, with heart shaped parapets and three gates. One of them is Famagousta’s gate, known as an exhibition and concert hall. Ancient graves, relics, medieval churches and mosques exist all around the city. The National Archaeological Museum, the Presidential Building, the Parliament, Saint John’s Church, the Byzantine Church of Virgin Mary Chrysaliniotissa, the Ethnographic Museum, the Folk Art Museum,  the Museum of National Struggle, the Archbishop’s Manor, the Severios Library are all found in Nicosia. The most famous street in Nicosia is Ledra’s street, a pedestrian street full of shopping centres, shops, cafes and restaurants and it is perhaps one of the much-frequent streets in the city. Ledra’s street leads to the Green Line, the border that splits the free Nicosia from the occupied and that

is where the peace forces of the United Nations are. This street ends at the Turkish Cypriot side. Right there at the Green Line on Ledra’s street there is an observation post from where you can see the entire occupied part of the city. The Old City with its Folk Neighborhood, a very picturesque area, which gathers many tourists but still reminds everyone of times long gone, is full of traditional shops and small coffee places. Nicosia, Cyprus’s capital is very beautiful and it will impress you not only for its monuments and museums but also for the artistic events that take place and its night life. You can find excellent hotels, well looked after up to the last detail, everywhere in the city.

HOLIDAY IN NICOSIA: In Nicosia you can find many types of accommodation from cheap hostels, guest houses and apartments to luxury hotels and suites. Some of them are located in the center of the city and near the monuments and some others are in more quiet areas just a few minutes from the center.
