Paphos Paphos was the daughter of Pygmalion and the Goddess Aphrodite. And so Paphos, Cyprus’s town was dedicated to the Goddess Aphrodite. Mythology says actually that the Goddess was born in Cyprus, just outside Paphos. Paphos used to be a powerful kingdom southwest of Cyprus that lived days of glory during the Hellenistic years. It is full of beautiful buildings, palaces, temples and it is surrounded by walls in order to be protected during the reign of the Ptolemies until the Turkish domination that probably its development decayed more than the other cities of the island. Since 1974 and until today Paphos splendid again represents an amazing tourist destination with wonderful beaches and archaeological treasures. The city of Paphos has two levels Paphos and Kato Paphos which is the tourist area of the city. Paphos is traditional and picturesque with ancient monuments like the Tombs of the Kings and the mosaics but it is also a pure tourist destination with many hotels near the sea, restaurants, bars and clubs. |

Paphos’s night life starts after ten o’ clock at night where the people pack the night clubs, the pubs and the bars in order to enjoy refreshing cocktails and dance. One of the most famous beaches in Paphos is Coral bay with its golden sand. Aphrodite’s baths is a place worth visiting. The Rock of the Greek is located outside Paphos and it is one of the city’s sights, just like the Folk Art Museum, Saint George’s Church and the Sea Caves. Near Paphos are the known Polis Chysochus and Kritou Terra that have amazing monuments and also the cape of Akamas an ecologic park. There is also a more recent small airport in Paphos. |
