Porto Katsiki

 

Porto Katsiki is located 35 km from the city of Lefkada. It is maybe the most beautiful beach in Lefkada and probably one of the finest in Greece. Every year, Porto Katsiki is among the 3 best beaches in Greece. In order to enjoy the sun and the sea in Porto Katsiki you have to go early in the morning before the crowds start overflowing it. The only downfall of this beach is the 90 steps you need to descend in order to reach it. The scenery will definitely reward you at the end of the descent. Before the steps there are restaurants and cafeterias where you can sit back and enjoy the view of the endless blue. Unfortunately you cannot spend the night in Porto Katsiki, unless you camp there, which is not actually advised. You can also reach the beach of Porto Katsiki by small boats that run from other parts of the island.

Egremnoi


Egremnoi is located approximately 30 km from the city of Lefkada. It is a magical place that can be compared with the exotic beaches of other countries. It was named Egremnoi, from the rocks that appear to cover the entire area. It stretches in 2 km, something that shows the tranquility you can find there, although it is not easily reached. A road full of curves leads to the beach and then a 350 steps descent to finally reach it. You can park your car at the parking lot and descent to the beach. The scenery will definitely reward your troubles to find the beach.  But if you are not willing to go through this ordeal, you can catch the small boats that leave from Vasiliki and visit the amazing Egremnoi. The beach is undamaged with aquamarine waters, fine white sand and a small bar that operates for 24-hours a day 24 with parties taking place or relaxing summer music. Naturally you can rent umbrellas and deck chairs although the rocks offer a more natural shade. You can also do free camping in Egremnoi, although it is not recommended since it might be difficult to leave from there in case of a great emergency. You should not finish your holidays in Lefkada without visiting Egremnoi that is deservingly considered one of the best beaches in Greece and other countries.

Nidri


Nidri is situated in the south-eastern side of the island and the distance from the center of the city is only 17 km. It is a famous and full of activity tourist resort in Lefkada. It is actually one of the first villages of the island that developed in the tourist industry. In the village’s harbor there is a statue of Aristotle S. Onassis, who since he bought the island of Scorpios, located opposite Nidri, helped a lot in the growth of tourism and in consequence of the economy. The beautiful landscape with the affluent vineyards, the fertile gardens and the sweet scented flower gardens, characterize Nidri and will easily gain your admiration. The village is built in a green and heavenly location; it also has an amazing beach which is a weakness for those who love swimming and water sports. Most of the water sports schools in Lefkada as well as renting equipment shops are located in Nidri. In Nidri’s marina, you can find many shops, taverns, cafeterias and kebab places. From Nidri you can catch the small boats that run from and to the islets of Scorpios, Madouri, Skorpidi and Meganisi. In Vlychos’ cape you can visit the grave of the German archaeologist Dorpfeld, who supported the idea that Odysseus’ palace was once in Nidri. His grave is found at the top of the hill and at the end of the peninsula of Vlychos you can visit the small church of Saint Kiriaki, which is believed to be built on an ancient Nymphs’ sanctuary.


The waterfalls of Nidri

It will be a big mistake to spend your holidays in Lefkada and not visit the magical waterfalls that are situated in Nidri. It is a place that looks like a work of art and will certainly make you forget whatever is on your mind. Inside the ultimate serenity and beauty, the waterfalls will cast your worries and troubles away. If you are bold enough, you will not be afraid to dive in the cold waters that will definitely rejuvenate you.

Kathisma


The beach of Kathisma is located only 12 km from the city of Lefkada and it is a beach that will not leave you impervious. It is considered one of the best beaches in Lefkada, and Greece. Its waves resemble exotic places and its calmness charms everyone. Apart from its wonderful beach, Kathisma also has beach bars, taverns, deck chairs and peaceful corners in order to sit back and enjoy the serenity of the endless blue. The sunset in Kathisma will mesmerize you and you will not be able to leave unless the sun submerges into the sea. The mountain that rises above the beach (which is also the reason this place was named Kathisma) is an ideal base for parachuting if you are an extreme sports fan. The free camping is not advised in this beach because there are occasional landslips from the rocks.

Vassiliki


Vassiliki is one of the most popular coastal villages of Lefkada. It is located in the Southern side of the island and it is a well known tourist resort and a harbor. It is found 38 km from the capital of the island. During the summer months you can enjoy windsurfing there since the winds are always perfect and Vassiliki is considered one of the most suitable beaches of the Mediterranean Sea for this kind of sport. You can find many shops there in order to rent or even buy equipment, as well as get some basic training. Moreover you can rent catamarans and yachts. Vassiliki is a wonderful village, with dense vegetation and a big sandy beach, suitable for family holidays since its shoal waters are safe for children. Vassiliki’s beach is considered one of the best beaches in Lefkada and it leads to the famous Ponti’s gulf. It is also possible, and on a daily basis, to go on excursions from Vassiliki to Ithaca and Kefalonia, to beaches that are not accessible by car and Porto Katsiki. The archaeological department supports that there are ancient building relics in Vassiliki’s valley that belong to the ancient city, but the excavations have not yet begun.

Saint John (Agios Ioannis)


Saint John’s beach is near the city of Lefkada (a distance of 3 klm). It is one of the most beautiful beaches in Lefkada. It is a vast area with aquamarine waters and permanent winds.    

You will also be able to see there the traditional windmills of Lefkada that give to its landscape an enchanting insular breeze. Every summer many leading Windsurfing and Kite surfing championships take place at the beach of Saint John.

Saint Nikitas (Agios Nikitas)


The amazing village of Saint Nikitas is situated in a small gulf. It is located in the north-western side of Lefkada. In this village the natural environment prevails, the green colour of the pines and the cypresses is linked with the white colour of the rocks and the aquamarine colour of the Ionian Sea. The beaches Mylos, Kathisma, Pefkoulia, Egremnoi and Porto Katsiki are found near Saint Nikitas. It is an ideal village for swimming, relaxation and also enjoyment. Saint Nikitas has been labeled by the Ministry of Environment as a traditional settlement. In the village you can find bars, tavernas, restaurants, hotels, room rentals and mini markets.

Scorpios Island


Scorpios, a paradise on earth, is a small islet that belongs to the prefecture of Lefkada and is one of the “Tilevoides islands”. The island was sold to the ship-owner Aristotle Onassis in 1963 and as a result it caught a lot of publicity and the tourism in Lefkada increased. It was, for a long time, the residence of the family, and Scorpios, as well as the entire island was a fashionable centre and attracted celebrities from all over world. Many famous personalities such as Maria Kallas, Gretta Garbo, Winston Churchill, members of the Kennedy family and many others spent their holidays in the blissful private island. Today, the graves of Onassis, his son Alexandros and his daughter Christina are on the island. It is a wonderful place of natural beauty that will impress you. It is considered one of the most important and famous sights in Greece, and also Europe. In order to visit it, you will need to catch one the boats that make daily cruises and leave form Nidri, which is situated 3 miles from the small islet. The ships stop in the not private beaches of Scorpios, which will impress you with their beauty and the green trees. Unfortunately the access to the interior of the island is prohibited.

Vafkeri


Vafkeri is a charming mountain village with dense vegetation, stone houses and a unique view.  From up there you can see all the other islands (Skorpios, Madouri, Meganisi), as well as the traditional mountainous villages of the island. The village’s climate is ideal for hiking, jogging and walking. Given the fact that Vafkeri is located in the centre of the island, you can easily transfer to all the other areas of Lefkada.

The Lagoon


The teals, pelicans and marabous use the lagoon of Geras as their habitat. There is a road that surrounds the lagoon and it is ideal for long drives, bicycle rides or walks. The lagoon is divided in two parts by a marine canal, the ditch. In the western smaller lagoon you can find the vivarium, Lefkada’s fish farm, where many fish are kept and provide the famous roe of the island.  Around the lagoon you can also find the some well known beaches such as Gera, Saint John, Myloi, Kastro and Ammoglossa.

Kalamitsi


Kalamitsi is a small village located 23 km, southeastern from the capital of the island. It is built on a green hill with an amazing view.

This village is one of the oldest villages on the island; it has 13 windmills and many churches that are scattered in the all the region. Among these churches you can also find the famous small church of Virgin Mary in the Gardens (Panagia stous Kipous). Kalamitsi is built high on a hill because the residents wanted to be protected from the regular pirate raids. The village’s beach is splendid, while the quiet bar and the rocks that embrace it create a wonderful landscape.

Karia


Karia is a mountainous village, known for its traditional Lefkadite embroideries and textiles. Every summer in Karia there is a festival that relives and celebrates the traditional lefkadite wedding. In case you are visiting Lefkada during that period try not to miss it. 

Nikiana


Nikiana is located 9 km north from the capital of the island. It is a small settlement that has been gradually developing through the years and offers lodgings, cafeterias, bars and taverns. Its beach is small, sandy and usually calm.

Pefkoulia


The extraordinary large sandy beach of Pefkoulia is located in the north side of Saint Nikitas’ village and 10 km from the city of Lefkada. It is considered one of the best beaches of the island.
The water has an emerald colour mixed with darker shades. The access to the beach is easy and this is the reason why it attracts many tourists during the summer months. There are also some taverns and rooms to rent in the area.

Poros


The village of Poros is situated 25 km from the city of Lefkada, near the green slopes of a hill that descends to the sea. Poros is amphitheatrically built and it has approximately 300 residents. There are numerous impressive traditional houses in the village. In the Church of Assumption there are many wall paintings and icons from the 17th century. If you pass by Poros, you must visit the old olive oil press and the ruins of the 4th century castle. Furthermore Poros has a small fishing port, named Mikros Gialos as well as beautiful beaches.

Sivota


This traditional fishing port is located 33 km   southern from the capital of the island, the beautiful homonymic cove. During the summer months it mostly gathers people that reach the area by yacht. Around the beach you can find lovely taverns to you enjoy fresh and tasty sea food.

Tsoukalades


Tsoukalades is a beautiful traditional village with stone houses and narrow cobblestone streets. If you wish to spend some relaxing days there, you will be able to find some small hotels.

The Melissa (Bee) Gorge


Bridges, watermills, caves, planes and springs. The Melissa (Bee) Gorge was sometimes a live and life giving place, while the waters from its streams made 64 watermills work. Today, only 6 of them are still operating, but the place remains alive, thanks to the hikers and the nature lovers that visit it. After walking for 2 kilometers you will reach the area where the watermills are assembled. In that part the path is divided in two new paths: the first leads to Apetasti and the second to Kako Lagkadi.
